A growing number of airlines now fly to and from Mauritius. All flights arrive at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, situated in the south east of the island it is the islands only airport. From the airport all destinations within the island can be reached by road, a good road network means all destinations can usually be reached in under 1.5hours.
  Visa Requirements
  A passport valid for at least 6months from the date of entry is required. For a stay of up to 3months a visa is not required for holders of EU, US, Canadian and Australian passports. The exceptions to this are Bulgarian and Romanian passport holders who should seek a 2week visa on entry. For up to date visa requirements for citizens of all countries please refer to the Mauritian government website www.gov.mu.
  Vaccinations
  Mauritius is free from tropical diseases and Malaria prophylaxis is not required. Those arriving form countries with yellow fever are required to have a yellow fever vaccine prior to arrival and are required to bring with them a yellow fever vaccination certificate, this only applies to travelers over one year of age.
  Currency
  The Currency is the Mauritian Rupee (Rs). Foreign currency can be changed into Rupees on arrival at the airport or at banks across the island. International banks such as HSBC and Barclays are also located in Mauritius. Visa Credit cards are accepted in many establishments and ATM’s can be found in many larger towns as well as across the capital Port Louis.
Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate making it an ideal holiday destination all year around, the winter months (May to November) tend to be cooler but are usually still warm enough to enjoy the beach. The hotter months (December to April) are also wetter and cyclones can occur in January and February. The weather varies dramatically across the island. The temperatures are highest in coastal areas and coolest in the central plateau, the north of the island also tends to be hotter than the south. Seasons are indistinct but generally the summer season can be considered to be the months December to April and the winter season being the months May to November. Between December and April temperatures average between 25C and 33C. In the winter months the temperatures average between 18C and 24C. The summer months are also the wettest with average rainfall of approx. 200mm per month in January to March and an average of just 40mm per month between September and November. Sunlight hours vary little throughout the year averaging 8hours per day.
The population is estimated at just over 1.2million. The people of Mauritius are very culturally diverse and are mainly from Indian, African, European and Chinese ancestry. English is the official language and is used for legal and educational purposes, however French is more widely spoken and is the main language of the media, Mauritian Creole is spoken by the majority of the population and is derived mainly from French it tends to be used in everyday conversation throughout the island, many native languages mainly from India and China are also spoken. The main religious groups in Mauritius are Hinduism 52%, Christianity (predominantly Roman Catholic) 28%, Islam 16%.
Mauritius, due to the cultural diversity of its people, celebrates a range of religious festivals. Each year there are15 public holidays, 7 with fixed dates (1& 2 January, 1st February, 12th March,1st May, 2nd November and 25th December). The remaining 8 days vary in date each year. The main festivals and religious events celebrated in Mauritius are Cavadee (Tamil), Chinese Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), Christmas, Divali (Hindu festival of light), Easter, Eid-ul-Fitr (Muslim end of Ramadhan), Ganesh Chathurti (Hindu birthday of Ganesha), Holi (Hindu festival of colour), Maha Shivaratree (Hindu celebration of Siva), Père Laval Pilgrimage (National celebration) and Ugadi (Telegu New Year). Independence was obtained on 12/03/1968. The Republic of Mauritius is now an independent republic within the commonwealth. The 12th March is celebrated each year and is always a public holiday.
